How a Retractable Roof Access System Works
Every Rollamatic residential roof access system is motorized with a direct drive retractable roof mechanism. The direct drive system is smooth, quiet, and virtually maintenance-free. There are no chains, pulleys, cable drives, or rack-and-pinion mechanisms, which are the parts most likely to fail in other systems.
When you press the momentary control switch, the roof section retracts along a track to open your rooftop fully. Depending on your available retraction space, the system can retract in the short direction or the long direction, open in sections, or glide as a single unit.. Rollamatic recommends momentary control switches within sight of the system as the safest control option.
When closed, the system sits at a low profile and provides a complete weather seal. Rollamatic’s water-tight guarantee backs every installation: the system will not leak when properly closed. Energy-efficient low-e glass is standard, with double or triple glazing available for improved insulation.

Single-section single slide
The entire roof section retracts as one unit onto adjacent roof space. The most straightforward option when space permits.
Operable over stationary
The retracting section travels over the top of an adjacent fixed section. This configuration maximizes interior light in situations where adjacent roof space is limited.
Telescoping
Sections of panels travel over the top of one another to then fully retract in a “stack.” This design may be selected for its sophistication or to address limited adjacent roof space. This example happens to also be bi-parting.
Low-rise segmented cone
A segmented profile suited to curved or transitional rooflines.

Curbs
Building code requires curbs around rooftop openings. These curbs act as a dam to prevent moisture entry at the roof plane. Rollamatic designs the curb as part of the system so it meets code requirements and integrates with the weather seal.
System Height
The overall minimum height at the low side of a roof access system is approximately 8 3/4 inches, with additional slope requirements depending on your roof pitch and local codes. The minimum pitch of a flat roof installation is ½:12, to allow for rainwater runoff.
Retraction Space
The system needs adequate space to retract when open. For example, an opening of approximately 3.5 feet by 11 feet requires sufficient adjacent roof area for the section to slide clear. If retraction space is limited, Rollamatic can configure the system to retract over a stationary section or telescope to reduce the required footprint.
