The Steam Room

Large retractable restaurant roof turned this seafood establishment’s deck into year-round dining space while boosting its status as an iconic destination.

Challenge:
The Steam Room is an institution in Port Jefferson, NY. The owner of this seafood restaurant overlooking the marina and the Long Island Sound wanted to give customers an experience of fresh air and great views while still being able to use the space during the colder months, unlike a traditional patio.

Rollamatic Solution:
This project dates back over 40 years, and is still in use today. The single section, gabled glass retractable roof is 40 ft by 40 ft. “It makes our whole restaurant. Our owner thought so highly of the concept and the product that when he opened a second restaurant, he had the same type of roof installed,” described Vinny Seiter, the General Manager. “People love to sit out on the patio for the views. In the winter it’s still a unique experience with all the natural light. It’s a big attraction for the business.”

Over 60% of the restaurant’s seating is on the patio covered by the Rollamatic. Most days between April and October the roof is opened. It remains closed during the colder months, allowing the space to still be used while giving the customers an outdoor-like experience.
