In the realm of architectural innovation, retracting roof systems have become a game-changer, seamlessly blending the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Beyond their functional advantages, these versatile designs can be applied in both commercial and residential settings, creating unique and captivating environments. In this blog post, we will explore some inspiring ideas that harness the power of retracting roofs, transforming spaces into vibrant, flexible, and dynamic areas.

6 Commercial and Residential Retracting Roof Ideas

Indoor/Outdoor Pool Retreat

Imagine a space where you can enjoy the luxury of a pool regardless of the weather outside. Retractable roofs offer an elegant solution to create an indoor/outdoor pool area. Whether it’s the warmth of summer or the crispness of winter, this concept allows residents or customers to bask in the pleasure of a pool experience while being shielded from the elements.

Rooftop Decks with a View

For both residential homes and businesses, a retractable roof can be the key to unlocking the potential of a rooftop deck. Capturing scenic views and maximizing seasonal good weather, these decks become enticing spaces for relaxation or social gatherings.

Rollamatic’s project with The Imogene Hotel + Rooftop Bar is a prime example, showcasing the successful integration of a retractable roof system to enhance the overall experience. You can read more about it here

The movable roof access for this rooftop bar at Imogene, in contrast to a fixed structure, introduces natural light into the stairwell and restaurant below when in a closed position. When the rooftop bar is open, it serves as a discreet access point, ensuring unobstructed views for patrons. This sophisticated feature not only attracts local visitors but also provides a memorable experience for out-of-town guests staying at the hotel.

Year-Round Atrium Spaces

The integration of retractable roofs can transform atriums into year-round spaces. By enclosing these areas, natural light and fresh air can flood in, revitalizing what might otherwise be a stuffy or dark interior. This concept extends beyond aesthetics, offering practical solutions for businesses or homeowners seeking adaptable spaces for various activities.

Revolutionizing Outdoor Dining Spaces

Restaurants and bars can elevate their offerings by implementing retractable roof systems for outdoor dining spaces. The ability to create year-round revenue by shielding patrons from unfavorable weather conditions is a game-changer. Our retractable restaurant roof project at The Steam Room is a concept that exemplifies how businesses can turn an outdoor space into a versatile and profitable asset.

This project, with a history spanning over four decades, continues to stand the test of time. The expansive gabled glass retractable roof, measuring 40 ft by 40 ft, remains an integral part of the restaurant’s ambiance. According to Vinny Seiter, the General Manager, the roof defines the entire dining experience. So convinced of its value, the owner replicated the concept when opening a second restaurant.

Impressively, over 60% of the restaurant’s seating is situated beneath the Rollamatic-covered patio. From April to October, the roof is regularly opened, providing an al fresco feel. During colder months, the roof remains closed, ensuring the space remains functional while still offering customers an outdoor-like experience.

Destination-Worthy Business Spaces

Businesses looking to upgrade their profile and become destination spots can utilize retractable roofs to create unique atmospheres. Our retractable bar roof project in San Francisco exemplifies how this innovative design can draw attention and elevate the status of a business by providing an unforgettable experience for visitors.

Rollamatic emerged as the ideal collaborator with Peacekeeper, a San Francisco restaurant, in bringing to life the vision of an unexpected, open-air experience within the confines of a neighborhood bar. Together, they opted for two retractable glass roofs, each measuring 15 ft by 12 ft, strategically positioned along the center of the space, constituting a substantial portion of the roof footprint.

This collaboration has transformed Peacekeeper into a sought-after destination, providing patrons with a distinctive experience that surpasses what traditional rooftop bars can offer. With the simple flick of a switch, guests can enjoy protection from the wind or rain, setting Peacekeeper apart as an iconic venue.

Jamal Blake-Williams, co-owner, expresses, “Our retractable roofs have elevated our establishment from a typical bar to an extraordinary experience. That’s what our patrons appreciate. We open at 1:00 p.m. on weekends, allowing them to bask in the sunlight through the afternoon. Come evening, our guests have the enchanting experience of stargazing while remaining shielded from the winds. Even if we need to close the roofs, which takes about a minute, due to rain, our patrons still get to enjoy the night sky.”

Observatory Experience

In the realm of residential applications, setting up a home observatory becomes a fascinating possibility with a retractable roof. This concept allows homeowners to seamlessly transition between an enclosed space and an open-sky observatory, providing an unparalleled stargazing experience.

Of course, institutional observatories benefit from retractable roof solutions as well. We have provided systems for universities and research sites across the United States. For example, we designed and built a flat roll-off roof for the University of Maine’s Clark Telescope Observatory, contributing to that historic observatory’s latest chapter.

Conclusion

Retractable roofs have revolutionized the way we design and experience both commercial and residential spaces. From enhancing outdoor amenities to creating year-round revenue streams for businesses, these ideas showcase the versatility and transformative power of retractable roof systems. As architects and homeowners continue to explore innovative designs, retracting roofs undoubtedly remain at the forefront of modern architectural trends, bridging the gap between indoor comfort and outdoor allure.
